There has to be a baby. Jolly is one of the ungendered dolls, but he reminds me of a boy I once taught who had blue eyes, tanned skin and white hair, and for a while did some of the most bizarrely original bad things I’ve ever seen. He once got on a table in the cafeteria and ran the whole length of it. The adults couldn’t catch him because the seated children were in the way. Another time he made the same trip crawling underneath the table.
He was a challenge. But we figured him out. His mother had left him, and he was so distraught he would do ANYTHING to get attention. So we mothered him, and it helped.
Jolly reminds me that just about everybody needs a little mothering at times.
